EDCP 343A Unit Plan

  1. A good to very good unit plan sketch! Your rationale, assessment plan and project are great, and well thought out. I like your lesson plans generally, but I have a few important suggestions as you bring these to your actual classroom:
    1) Your focus on financial literacy is important, but it should not bypass the mathematics involved. It seems to me that you've put important mathematical concepts like simple vs. compound interest into a 'black box' (the savings calculator app or the short video on investment), so that students rely on others' knowledge to calculate everything. There is a wonderful opportunity here for exploration and for students to use their rational skills to understand and derive patterns and even formulae for simple and compound interest -- and to understand the differences in an in-depth way. If you just show them this video and this calculator, the opportunity is missed! They may eventually use the calculator for practical purposes, but they should know that they could reconstruct the reasoning behind it at any time.
    2) You have referred to worksheets and problems but haven't included them as extra sheets to go with your lesson plans. There is enough in the lesson plans to give me a sense of what might be included here, but for your SA and FA, you will definitely need to include any handouts, problems, worksheets, etc. that you will be using with the class to communicate more clearly what your lesson will be about.

Generally, quite a good unit plan sketch that can be enhanced when you teach it in your practicum.

Final Reflection

It was interesting to see math from a different lens from what I grew up with. Going over topics like teacher bird/student bird, instrumenta...
